Ce 24 août 2014 au Forum d’Inglewood (Californie), MTV organisait sa 31e cérémonie des Video Music Awards.

En tête des nominations dans neuf catégories, Beyoncé a été la star de la soirée. La chanteuse a reçu deux trophées pour son titre "Pretty hurts" (Meilleure cinématographie et Vidéo à message), un autre pour son duo avec son mari Jay Z ("Drunk in love"), ainsi que le prix Vanguard pour sa carrière. C’est d’ailleurs Jay Z qui est venu lui remettre ce prix Michael Jackson, avec leur fille Blue Ivy dans les bras.

Le couple a également échangé un bisou, devant des téléspectateurs qui se demandent toujours si le couple le plus influent de la scène musicale américaine va bientôt divorcer.

Beyoncé n’est pas seulement venue chercher ses statuettes en famille, l’américaine a interprété un medley de 16 minutes contenant ses dernières chansons. L’artiste a été acclamée pour sa prestation.

Miley Cyrus, elle, n'est pas venue sur scène pour récupérer son award pour "Wrecking ball" (vidéo de l’année). La chanteuse a préféré que ce soit Jesse, un jeune SDF, qui soit à sa place et fasse un discours sur ceux actuellement dans sa situation. C’est une belle action, loin de la polémique de sa performance sexplicite avec Robin Thicke de l’an dernier

Mais, la carte sexy est quand même sortie de la part de Nicki Minaj venue interpréter son nouveau single "Anaconda". La rappeuse a également performé aux côtés d’Usher pour "She came to give it to you", et de Jessie J et Ariana Grande sur "Bang Bang". Cette dernière a également été récompensée, ainsi que Katy Perry, Sia, Eminem (7 nominations)…

David Guetta était nommé pour son featuring avec Mikky Ekko (One Voice) mais n’a pas remporté le prix.

Quant à l’annonce des artistes et à la remise des statuettes, s’en sont chargées : Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo, Gwen Stefani, Kim Kardashian West, Snoop Dogg, Lorde, Jim Carrey, Trey Songz…
